Add a clip

Thanks for wanting to contribute a clip to our site! First, make sure your clip is in QuickTime or a QuickTime-supported format (like MP3 or AAC) and related somehow to the 2004 election. Second, make sure you hold the copyright to the clip and are willing to make it available under a Creative Commons license for others to copy and share. Once you've done all that, you're ready to submit it to our site:

  1. Get an Internet Archive library card. Clips are generously hosted by the Internet Archive. To upload your clip to the archive, you just need to fill out this simple form.

  2. Upload the clip. You'll need an FTP client. (Windows users can grab SmartFTP and Mac users can get Transmit.)

Use the client to connect to movies-uploads.archive.org (note both movies and uploads are plural) or audio-uploads.archive.org if it's audio. Use your email address as your login username and the password you gave for your Internet Archive library card.

Create a new folder with the same name as the clip, so if your clip is FicusAttackAd5.mov then the folder should be named FicusAttackAd5. Upload the movie into the folder and wait until it's finished copying the whole thing (this can take a little while, even on fast Internet connections).

  3. Process the clip. Once you're sure the clip is finished uploading, go back to the archive (click here for movies and click here for audio) and click "Begin". Find the movie you uploaded and click the "import movie" link.

In the yellow box at the top, you'll have to certify that you're not infringing anyone's copyright and then choose the Creative Commons license you want to make the clip available under.

Below, you can add additional metadata about the film. Be sure you at least put in a helpful title and description. Also make sure you select "P2P Politics" as the collection (audio users should select "P2P Politics (Audio)") -- otherwise your clip will never make it to our site.

  4. Get accepted. Now you just have to wait. Our curators will watch your clip to make sure it's suitable before approving it and adding it to our website.

Good luck and thanks for sharing!
